Gunnar Sorensen (93), a long time resident of Mt. Prospect, passed away in his sleep Tuesday, February 12, 2019. At age 17, Gunnar enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois and went on to work for Commonwealth Edison for 41 years, retiring in 1991. During his time at Commonwealth Edison, he was project manager responsible for the construction of both the Collins and Byron Nuclear Power Stations. Gunnar was known to his kids as the “popcorn king” and to his great grandchildren as the “candyman”.

Surviving is his wife Ruth; 3 children Karen (Robert) Everett, Jeffrey (June) Sorensen Nancy Reiss; 6 grandchildren Brittney Everett, Courtney Everett, Ryan (Jill) Sorensen, Nicole (Frank) Holthouse, Katie (Andrew) Bazan and Sherry Reiss; 4 great grandchildren; his sister Katy Hanson; sister in law Shirlie Sorensen; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Lynn, his parents Anton and Marie, his brother Viggo, brother-in-law Bertram Hanson, and his son-in-law Joseph Reiss.

Visitation Saturday, February 16, 10:00 a.m. until time of Funeral Service 11:30 a.m. at Friedrich’s Funeral Home, 320 W. Central Rd., (at Northwest Highway) Mt. Prospect, IL 60056.

Interment private.
